Star Wars fastest movie to earn $1bn

The Force Awakens has reached $1 billion at the box office, achieving the milestone with record-setting hyper speed. The Walt Disney Co. said The Force Awakens crossed the billion-dollar mark Sunday, accomplishing the feat in just 12 days. The previous movie to reach $1 billion the fastest was Universal’s Jurassic World, which did it in 13 days in June. Jurassic World also had the benefit of record grosses in China. The Force Awakens doesn’t open in the world’s second-largest movie market until January 9. JJ Abrams’ installment of Star Wars also posted the biggest Christmas Day box office in history with $49.3 million and the best second-weekend earnings with $153.5 million. The Force Awakens has been setting records since its debut December 17. It brought in a galactic $238 million in North America over its opening weekend, besting previous record-setter Jurassic World, and set international opening-weekend records in Australia, New Zealand and throughout Europe. It scored the biggest worldwide debut with $529 million. It also topped $100 million in IMAX screenings in 10 days, another global record. “You almost have to rewrite all the record books for this movie,” box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian of Rentrak said. “It’s absolutely mind-blowing that Star Wars could get to a billion dollars in 12 days and it hasn’t even opened in China, the second biggest movie market in the world.” A juggernaut like Star Wars empowers the entire industry, Dergarabedian said. “It’s great for the audiences, great for studios and theatre owners in particular who can point to this and say the movie theatre industry is as viable and relevant as it’s ever been,” he said. 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ to top $1b in ticket sales

The Force remains strong with the new Star Wars movie, which is on track to top $1 billion (Dh3.67 billion) in global ticket sales this weekend, making it the fastest-ever film to reach that level, reports Gulf News. Walt Disney Co said in a statement on Saturday that Star Wars: The Force Awakens had generated box office receipts of $890.3 million globally through December 25 and would pass $1 billion this weekend. The movie, the seventh installment in the newly rebooted Star Wars franchise, opened in some international markets on December 16 before rolling out in North America the following day. It is set to hit the $1 billion mark no later than Sunday, its 12th day in theatres, according to industry research firm Rentrak. The current record holder for being the fastest to gross $1 billion is Comcast Corp-owned Universal Pictures’ Jurassic World, which took 13 days after its release earlier this year, Rentrak said. The new Star Wars movie had already topped Jurassic World for the biggest opening weekend ever with $529 million globally. Disney said Star Wars has rung up $440.4 million in US and Canada ticket sales and $449.9 million internationally, and it is set to open in China, the world’s No. 2 movie market, on January 9. China is crucial if Disney’s first foray into the world of Jedi knights is to earn a spot among the top-grossing films of all time. On Friday, The Force Awakens set a US and Canadian record for largest box office on Christmas day with $49.3 million, Disney said. That topped the previous record of $24.6 million set by Sherlock Holmes in 2009. Disney purchased the Star Wars franchise from George Lucas’ Lucasfilm in 2012 for $4.05 billion, and has planned for a new trilogy of films as well as standalone installments through 2019.
