The National Board of Revenue (NBR) still could not come out of the cycle of revenue deficit in the current fiscal year, though it was successful in achieving the target in the last fiscal. As of November last the growth in the revenue collection stood at 24 percent. But the NBR has to achieve 30 percent growth for meeting the revenue collection target.
NBR sources said with the aim of achieving the collection target in the next six months the revenue board took different initiatives including ensuring ‘good governance’ in the tax administration. Most of the initiatives are the brainchildren of the incumbent NBR chairman, Nojibur Rahman, say revenue officials.
Taking establishment of ‘good governance’ as a challenge Nojibur Rahman joined the NBR as its chairman on January 12 in the current calendar year. He vowed to achieve the revenue collection target set by the government.
The initiatives of the NBR chairman caused a buzz among the officials and employees of the board throughout the year. The most remarkable of them were the retirement of two senior members of the customs cadres. On the other hand, on the basis of allegations, some dishonest officials were transferred as part of punishment. All these steps were appreciated.
